Winter County Cup Report

After a year away from Winter County Cup due to Covid, it was great to be back!

Group 4a at Hills Road

Group 3a at Edgbaston Priory

Day 1

Both teams were looking to pick up points early on in the singles with the men, on home soil, vs Notts and the ladies vs Warwickshire.

The men certainly enjoyed playing at home and didn't disappoint the spectators with some sublime play. Racing through the singles the team were 6-0 before they knew it and into the doubles. Winning 2 of the 3 doubles the team secured an impressive 8-1 victory.

Special shout-out to James Morris and great to see you back representing Cambs!

The Cambs ladies had a tough ride against an inform Warwickshire team and took some early losses. Annie dug her heels in and showed her fighting spirit to outlast her opponent in a 3hr 45min marathon to claim her victory 7-5 in the 3rd. The ladies were trailing 3-5 going into the final match and managed to grab the last victory of the day.

Day 2

Mixed fortunes for the Cambs teams today with a win and a loss.

The men showed their singles supremacy and took a 5-1 lead.

Two of the doubles went to match tie breakers but not in favour of Cambs. Seth and Christof had their senior county debuts and put up a tremendous fight before being ousted 13-15.

The ladies had another tough encounter, this time against Avon. Early losses for the Cambs ladies put a dent in their plans and finished with a 3-6 loss.

Day 3

The Cambs teams were battling for promotion and group safety.

A long hard day for all players which resulted in two narrow finals day losses.

Overall the Men finished in 2nd and the Ladies were unfortunately relegated with 3 tough losses.

Chris Little, Men's Captain said on their match with South Wales:

"Wow, what a weekend! Hard to describe just how close that was and the standard for a group 4 match. Heart-breaking we couldn’t quite get it done today.

The County should be incredibly proud of the boys because the level of grit and fight was up there, they had to wheel out a highly ranked ATP player just for our match, without him, we are definitely winning. Ben Clark had a standout win over a quality veteran in a three set battle.

The atmosphere at Hills Road was truly rocking."
