2021 Cambridgeshire Festival of Tennis
The Cambridgeshire Festival of Tennis held at the Cambridge LTC during the week of 22nd to 28th August attracted its largest entry for several years with 212 people playing in the age groups 8U - 18U, Open and through to 40/50 men’s event. In addition, a further 48 players competed in the mini red team event (12 club teams) and 36 players in the orange team event (9 club teams).
The event finished with a fun team event and BBQ on the Saturday for all the players who have been involved in County training throughout this difficult year. A highlight was when the younger players paired with the older ones to create a fantastic County Team atmosphere.
During the week, there was 27 events, a total of 507 matches plus 124 red team matches and 108 orange team matches, finished with everyone still having a smile on their faces even referees Sue Rich and Tim Arthur!
The outstanding players who performed both with their tennis skills, amassing most of the trophies between them and also their excellent on court demeanour and sportsmanship during the week were Isabelle Havard who won the Ladies Open, 18U girls singles and Seth Briggs-Williams who won the boys 16U and 18U singles, 18U doubles with Christof Schaertlin Coffey and reached the Men’s Open semi-finals and then Issie and Seth paired up to win the final event of the tournament the mixed open doubles!
Not to be outdone, smiling 11 year old May Havard (sister of Issie) also won two trophies the girls 11U and 14U events.
The sportsperson of the week was Christof Schaertlin Coffey who had the misfortune to play Seth in both the 16 and 18 singles finals and ended up as runner up in both but did win the doubles with Seth!
The outstanding day was when the boys 12 and under semi-finals took place and these two matches were the closest of the week with all 4 boys playing some fantastic tennis in unbelievably good sporting conditions and a credit to not only themselves but also the County. Harry Voss beat Jianzhou Mei 7/5, 3/6, 10-5 in one semi final and Leo Runciman played Arnas Simkus in the other and Leo won 4/6, 7/6 (9), 11-9. These 4 boys together with Mason Harrigan had played for the Cambridge Club in the Premier National League Finals earlier in July when they came fourth in the Country – a great team.
The men’s open was won by Pawel Safuryn who followed up his success in the Cambridge Open tournament in July with a double win. He beat Ben Clarke in a very entertaining final played late into the night 6/4, 6/7, 10-6. The Ladies Open saw Isabelle beat Alice McGee in another very good match 7/5, 6/4.
Thanks again to Cambridgeshire LTC, Hills Road and David Lloyd Cambridge for hosting the events, our fabulous referees, Sue Rich and Tim Arthur, coaches, helpers and scorers.
Lastly, well done to everyone who competed and to the Cambridgeshire tennis parents for your continued support.
We hope that this year has really inspired everyone and we look forward to seeing you all back next year.
