125th Summer County Cup Recap

On one of the hottest County Cup weeks for a while, the Cambridgeshire teams hit the grass courts at The Northern LTC and West Worthing, aiming for promotion!

Led by team Captains, Chris Little and Laura Nigri, the players were armed with suncream, gallons of water and plenty of passion. There was even time for the ladies to sample the local fish and chips when they arrived in Worthing!

If you've been following our coverage on social media, you might have already seen the amazing efforts that our teams went too, in not only playing but sending in updates, pictures and videos for you all to see.

Men's team results:

  • 6-3 win vs South Wales
  • 5-4 win vs Middlesex
  • 3-6 loss vs Yorkshire
  • 5-4 win vs Buckinghamshire
  • 6-3 win vs Cheshire

With promotion to Group 1 on their minds, the Cambs 'Warriors' bagged two early wins to get their campaign started. The 5-4 win vs Middlesex was a very tense affair with the team winning it 11-9 on a champions tie break, not for the faint hearted.

A tough loss against overall group winners Yorkshire followed on Day 3, which put a dent in their promotion aspirations. Another very close 5-4 win followed and 2nd place insight.

A final day win over Cheshire secured 2nd place for the team and PROMOTION to Group 1 for next year!

The player of the week was Harry Wendelken who won 11 from 15, closely followed by Matthew Taylor with 9 from 13.

Ladies team results:

  • 8-1 win vs Durham & Cleveland
  • 6-3 win vs Sussex
  • 2-7 loss vs Somerset
  • 8-1 win vs Bedfordshire
  • 5-1 win vs Berkshire

The Cambs ladies got off to a fiece start with early wins over Durham & Cleveland and hosts Sessex. Day 3 proved to be a testing one and the team were undone by a strong Somerset team, who eventually won the group.

Putting the Somerset loss behind them, the ladies got back to winning ways and raced through the final two matches to secure 2nd place and PROMOTION!

A solid week for the team and Group 3 awaits them next year.

Top performers were Anneka & Sophie Watts who won 11 out of 14 matches, closely followed by Kira Reuter & Megan Carmichael with 10 wins from 12. Special mention to Neha Kibria who was the youngest member of the team but showed great composure throught the week.

An amazing week for both our teams in battling the conditions and to win their well deserved promotions.
